Can I Wear My Jewelry? 5 Things You Must Know Before Your MRI

You just got your MRI appointment. You're dressed, running on time — and then the technician stops you at the door. This checklist exists so that never happens to you. Read it once, arrive prepared, and get your scan done without delay.

1. The MRI machine is an incredibly powerful magnet — always

Unlike an X-ray machine that only activates during the scan, the MRI magnet is always on. It doesn't switch off between patients. Any metal object in its presence — whether on your body or in your pocket — becomes a projectile at high speed. This is not a precaution. It is physics.

Metallic implants inside the body can also heat up or shift position during a scan. This is exactly why safety screening at the door isn't optional — it is there to protect you.

2. All jewelry must come off — without exception

This includes items you may not think of as "metal." Before your scan, remove your rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, nose pins, lip rings, belly bars, hair clips and pins, watches, and hearing aids.

Even small piercings count. If removing a piercing is difficult, let our staff know ahead of time — they can advise you on what to do.

3. Your clothing matters just as much as your jewelry

Many everyday garments contain hidden metal. When dressing for your MRI appointment, avoid jeans with metal zippers, belts with metal buckles, clothing with metallic threads, and shoes with metal supports.

The best option is a simple cotton shalwar kameez with no metal fastenings. We also provide a patient gown at the center if needed — just ask our staff when you arrive.

4. Your belongings are secure — but leave valuables at home

At Super Diagnostic MRI & CT Scan, you will be given a security for all personal items before entering the scan room — your phone, wallet, keys, and any jewelry you remove on-site.

That said, we recommend leaving expensive jewelry and large amounts of cash at home on the day of your scan. It's one less thing to worry about.

5. Implants and internal devices require special attention

If you have anything surgically placed inside your body, you must disclose it before your scan. This includes pacemakers or cardiac devices, cochlear implants, joint replacements (knee or hip), surgical screws, plates or clips, dental implants or braces, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and insulin pumps.

Most modern implants are MRI-safe, but our radiologist must verify this on an individual basis. Never assume — always disclose.
